This class is not just for Senior Citizens. All are welcome to join us for a gentle practice of yoga. Your mind will be peaceful, your body will be relaxed and your spirit will be awakened!
Senior citizens looking for the ultimate anti-aging remedy may want to consider yoga.
Yoga lets you trade in the characteristics of old age for the characteristics of youth. Yoga slows down the aging process by improving elasticity of the spine, firming up the skin, reducing facial wrinkles, strengthening abdominal muscles, improving tone in flabby arm muscles, correcting poor posture and preventing back humps. It also improves balance, which can prevent falls.
There are excellent yoga postures that can ease the transition into Menopause by helping in the production of hormones and stimulation to the ovaries. Poses that place the head lower than most of the body (such as Uttanasana, forward fold) stimulates the endocrine system, especially the pituitary gland, which controls the changes in hormone levels that occur in menopause.
Yoga is dynamite to help you feel younger. Your mind is sharper because you learn to focus and improve your exercise. The result of yoga is you achieve longevity and you stay healthier so you can be around with your grandkids and experience life, as you get older.
Yoga could increase a person's immunity against disease, lower blood pressure and decrease heart rate by improving breathing techniques. It also helps people sleep when thoughts might keep running through a person's head in the middle of the night.
Many students have told me that yoga has improved their sleep and decreased their anxiety by improving their ability to breathe deeply and properly. Deep breathing allows the body to relax and settle the mind.
Yoga not only improves flexibility, but also prevents injuries. It is beneficial for senior citizens with health problems such as arthritis and osteoporosis. Weight-bearing poses such as Downward Facing Dog has been shown to actually improve bone density.
Yoga is for anybody at any stage in his or her life. In fact, I can't think of a more appropriate population for yoga than the elderly. Age should be no limitation in starting yoga.
In addition to the benefits of relaxation and meditation, which is beneficial for strengthening the nervous system, yoga also improves the circulation and alleviates symptoms of many ailments.
It is never too late to make positive changes to improve your health. Not only can these changes add years to your life, they also add life to your years.
This class is also appropriate for new students, for people recovering from injuries, or anyone who wish to begin their practice at a gentler pace.
